The Russian fires have spread to
British Columbia in Canada.

Here in Portugal there are many assumptions that burning woods are the result of arson. But firebugs are not the likeliest culprits. Careless smokers seems far likelier causes of fires which seem to take off sporadically in different places. A big cause of fires is the proliferation of ugly bark-dropping eucalyptus trees, which are big water-gobblers, and of course are not native to Portugal. They come from Australia but were planted in Portugal because they grow fast and their pulp can be used to make paper. Frankly, I wish they would be cut down every one. Writer Eca de Quieroz already called for a ban on eucalpytus trees in the 19th century.

One thing that all the fires and my tree uprooting project can do is put more Portuguese to work. Desculpe. I misstated the level of Portuguese unemployment in my Weds. blog. The mainland (excluding the Azores and Madeira) has a 10% rate of joblessness, still half that of next-door Spain.

More from Britain, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Hong Kong, Israel, Canada and Denmark follows.

To say nothing of Portugal. But before I take on our exotic companies, I wanted to warn you all not to take too seriously the latest ominous chart pattern, named after the Blimp Hindenberg. Yes, it blew up and set back the cause of motorless flight for decades. But a Hindenberg is clearly not as disastrous as a Death Cross, the last chartist panic call two months ago, which was followed by a normal flat market since then. Neither chart pattern has a long-term convincing history. They are just used by bears to scare us off the stock market.

*Portugal Telephone was rated strong buy by Deutsche Bank which predicts that its earnings will rise sharply when Brazil’s Oi has replaced its former jv with Spain’s Telefonica there. In addition to a still unannounced special dividend for the TEF purchase, the Lisbon analysts of the German bank predict that PT will raise its regular dividend by 20%. But the "million dollar question" according to the bnak is when the special payout will take place. Much depends on the speed with which Oi is bought in Brazil and the timing of TEF payments to get control of Vivo.

Meanwhile Deutsche expects PT’s dividend to be raised to euros 10.4 per share from 8.7. Diario Economico, the local daily stock sheet, says that DB bought 10 mn shares of PT off the market and Credit Suisse a further 9 mn. Join them. BUY PT in the present blighted market.

*National Bank of Greece whose preferred 9.8% shares we recommend, has raised its stake in Stopanska Banka from the International Finance Corp. and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. That entity is in Macedonia. Cost was euros 35 mn. NBG is cash-rich despite being Greek. It has also bought the rest of Turkish leasing firm Finans that it did not already own for euros 42 mn.

*Hot hands are eyeing BG Group which is reportedly in play. We own the British external gas producer, BRGYY, one of the rare stocks rising in the current malaise. It is supposedly an acquisiiton target. No details yet.

*GlaxoSmithKline will benefit from FDA fast tracking approval plans for its Benlysta drug against lupus, developed with Human Genome Science. The latter share is up but GSK is flat because of other worries. The new drug is a biologic and the first advance against lupus in decades.

*The new Fidelity China Special Situations Fund is using cheap borrowed money to invest in China stocks. Manager Anthony Bolton is a famous money manager and I am chuffed that he is doing what I am doing with the Covestor yield fund readers can copy my moves in. More importantly, the 4th largest holding of the new fund (4.2%) is in TenCent holdings, the Chinese texting service. We own it through the 35% stake held by Naspers, NPSNY, the South Africa media group.

*Longterm you want to be wary of Danes. They sell at an instant’s notice because they mistrust each other. So readers with a taste for green (money or environment) might want to start looking at Vestas Wind System.

VWDRY had an appalling quarter. But the world’s largest maker of windmills, the sort used on the hilltops here in Portugal to make power for running laptops, is a long-term good bet. The management is okay and they are suffering mainly from the conjuncture of the market, cuts in orders because of uncertainty about the eventual subsidies and payback times. But despite Don Quixote, windmills make sense.

*Target prices for Cenovus were cut by Toronto Dominion an UBS, to C$33 from 34. CVE is another alternative energy play, not quite as green since it will develop tarsands in Alberta Canada. Fear of double dip and lower oil prices are hurting temporarily, in my view.

*A reader with pharma knowledge says that Teva will not suffer from any delay launching the ADHD drug generic (thanks to Lilly’s suit) because the drug is no good anyway.

*Two notes for former subscribers to Global Investing Pro follow. First the potential dismantling of the world potash cartel (run by Potash of Saskatchewan for most of the developed world) risks hurting Israel Chemicals, ISCHF. If as it promises, acquirer BHP ends cooperation with the cartel, ISCHF will lose the price support for its non-Israeli potash production, in Britain. So ISCHF is a sell because it is not just on the Dead Sea. Low priced SoQuiMich, as Frida Ghitis wrote yesterday, is not.

*Brilliant results were reported by Hong Kong’s Kingboard Chemicals, with sales of its laminates, chemicals, and printed circuit boards up a whopping 82% in H1 to HK$16.4 bn on which profits were up 81% to 1.78 bn (or 2.108 HK$/sh). We own the ADRs equal to two shares. The dividend will be raised to 50 HK cents/sh (i.e. 1 HK$ for us) from 30 cents.
